No particular compliance platform is required for ISO 42001. Drata or Vanta can help you manage evidence and workflows, but buying software is not the same as implementing or certifying an AI management system. Decide whether the platform solves a real operating problem for your team. ISO 42001.
| Situation | What to assess |
|---|---|
| You already use a platform for another framework | The current ISO 42001 quote, applicable evidence reuse and additional work. |
| Your AI scope is small and stable | Whether controlled documents and existing task systems are sufficient. |
| Evidence is fragmented across teams | Ownership, integrations, access control and audit-trail requirements. |
| Nobody owns AI risk decisions | Appoint competent owners; a licence alone will not close that gap. |
Atoro is an Irish AI governance and cyber compliance consultancy, and the first in Europe to be certified against ISO 42001. Disclosure: Atoro is a Drata Compliance Accelerator Program partner. This guide explains whether you need a platform; it does not rank Drata against Vanta.
What must exist without a platform?
You need a working AI management system, with evidence that your processes and controls operate. The repository is only one part of that system.
An implementation needs a defined scope, assigned responsibilities, policies, risk and impact assessments, appropriate controls and ongoing review. A platform can help organise those activities, but the organisation still needs to understand and manage its AI use. ISO’s explanation.
For example, uploading an AI policy does not show whether staff understand the permitted uses. Completing an assessment template does not show whether the analysis considered the people affected by a system. Ask what evidence demonstrates the activity, not just where a file is stored.
What can Drata or Vanta help with?
Both vendors offer ISO 42001 support. Compare their current capabilities against your own workflow and the plan you are being quoted.
Drata describes framework management, controls and evidence workflows; Vanta describes support for AI governance and ISO 42001. Product features and packaging change, so confirm which functions are included in your contract rather than relying on a generic feature list. Drata framework documentation, Vanta ISO 42001.
Use a demonstration built around your work: one AI use case, an impact assessment, an owner, a control and its supporting evidence. Ask to see how a change is recorded, reviewed and traced. That is more useful than comparing dashboard screenshots.
What still needs accountable people?
Tools can assist analysis and drafting; your organisation remains responsible for the decisions and their quality.
Assign people who can explain the AI scope, supplier arrangements, relevant risks and impacts, control choices and unresolved limitations. Review AI-generated assessments against the actual system and available evidence. Do not accept fluent text as proof that a risk has been understood.
A consultant can support that work; an experienced internal team can do it itself. Either way, record who approves the assessment and who owns follow-up actions. A software-generated answer and a management decision are different things.
Can we reuse ISO 27001 or SOC 2 evidence?
Yes, where it remains relevant, but evidence reuse is not exclusive to a platform. Check applicability before mapping an existing file to another requirement.
Existing access reviews, competence records or document-control processes may support parts of the AI management system. They do not automatically answer questions about AI impacts, system behaviour or role allocation. A mapping is a starting point for assessment, not proof that a requirement is satisfied.
Ask the vendor or implementer to distinguish three things: evidence reused unchanged, evidence that needs extending, and entirely new work. This gives you a more credible basis for the buying decision than an unsupported percentage of overlap.
Which delivery approach fits?
Choose according to the skills and operating capacity you have, not a rule that every company needs the same combination.
- Platform and specialist support: useful when you want structured evidence workflows plus help with scope, assessments and ISO 42001 implementation.
- Specialist support using existing tools: a possible fit when the scope can be managed with controlled documents and clear ownership.
- An internal team with a platform: suitable where competent staff can own the management system and use the tool to support delivery.
Whichever route you choose, budget for keeping the system operating after certification. New AI uses, supplier changes and findings still need attention between audits.
How should we assess the quote?
Compare the total work and cost, not just the framework licence. Neither a platform nor a consultant should be assumed to include the independent certification audit.
Both Drata and Vanta publish plan information and provide pricing by quotation. Check which tier includes the framework. Drata’s Foundation plan includes a choice from five named frameworks, which do not include ISO 42001; Advanced lists any available framework, and additional frameworks are listed as add-ons. Ask for a written quote confirming ISO 42001, integrations, users, implementation support and renewal terms rather than assuming your existing plan covers it.
Our recommendation: add the framework when your existing platform is working well and the expected time savings justify the quote. If you have no platform, do not buy one solely because you think ISO 42001 requires it. Compare the administrative effort it can save with the licence cost and the human assessment work you still need to fund.
What does the certification body assess?
The assessment concerns your management system’s conformity and operation, not a preferred software brand.
ISO does not itself issue certificates. Accreditation is a separate assessment of a certification body’s competence; it is not synonymous with certification. Check the accreditation and scope your customers require. For AI management-system certification bodies, ISO/IEC 42006 adds AI-specific requirements to ISO/IEC 17021-1. FAQs
1. Can we get certified using documents and spreadsheets?
Yes, no particular compliance platform is mandated. Your records still need to support a functioning management system with appropriate control, ownership and evidence.
2. Does buying the module buy certification?
No. Implementation, operating evidence and the certification body’s assessment remain separate from the software purchase.
3. Can we reuse our existing Drata evidence?
Potentially, where it applies to the AI scope and requirement. Check each mapping and distinguish reused records from AI-specific work that still needs doing.
4. Is adding ISO 42001 to Vanta automatically worth it?
No automatic return can be assumed. Compare the actual quote, included functions and administrative effort saved against your alternatives.
5. Can AI software draft an impact assessment?
It can assist with analysis and documentation. Competent people must review the reasoning, verify the system-specific evidence and own the resulting decisions.
6. Does a consultant make software unnecessary?
Not necessarily; the two can support different parts of the work. Decide how the management system will operate after the initial implementation, including who maintains the records.
7. Is accredited certification compulsory?
Accreditation and certification are separate concepts, and accreditation is not universally compulsory. Atoro recommends checking accredited options and the exact assurance requirements of your buyers before selecting a certification body.
8. What should we do before buying anything?
Define the AI scope, identify the assurance requirement and assess the gaps in your current system. Then compare the software, specialist support and audit services needed to close those gaps.
For a platform-neutral implementation scope, book a conversation with Atoro. We can assess the work in your existing tools before recommending any additional purchase.
